not an expert, and I dont know the hard numbers.

but I think 4k, is 4000 pixels (width I believe) for the matte resolution, which is about twice screen resolution, so to add enough detail, then size down for feature resolution. (these are feature movie resolutions).

artists often thumbnail draw (sketch) very small, then rez Up, to 2-3-4000
px, detail like crazy, and then size down to the final resolution for the project.

theater will be bigger, than say TV or web.

Ive seen a good rule of thumb is to work at double final output.

Take a look at this topic.

They way I work, and others probably do to is 2 times the standard output resolution i.e if its NTSC (tv) which is 720x480 then you might do your painting at 1440x960 or maybe you want to do it 4x larger than standard output so that would be 2880 x 1980.

for film if the plate is 2k (2048x1536) you might paint at 4096 x 3072.

get my drift?
